Virtual Study Abroad Experience
Many study abroad programs have migrated to online learning options due to COVID. Although the Newport Overseas Opportunities page highlights some amazing premed related internships abroad, not all the premed programs have moved to an online format. So like everything related to COVID, you need to change your thinking around and adapt to the new landscape. This could be a great opportunity for you to work on your communication skills through a virtual international internship or work on your language skills with a professor in Paris or improve your cross cultural competency skills through a social entrepreneurship class with a working group in Budapest. Sounds kind of cool actually. If you are still yearning for the study abroad experience, you can always plan for something for next summer or even a gap year abroad. Many medical schools offer their own global opportunities so there will always be an opportunity to go abroad. Keep in mind that although the US is chugging along with their vaccine roll out, many other countries lag behind. Paris, Hong Kong and Buenos Aires are not going anywhere. There will be time in the future when it is safe to go abroad.

Programs
Child, Family Health International offers programs for premeds interested in Global Health, health disparities, and international medicine. CFHI has temporarily suspended in person programs through August 31, 2021 but they are recruiting participants for September 1, 2021 on. They do offer virtual opportunities.

Loop Abroad will be operating its in-person Thailand Veterinary Semester Abroad for pre-vet students beginning in January. Loop programs are designed by veterinarians and taught by veterinarians.
Don’t forget to look at Newport’s Overseas Opportunities page for a list of premed/science programs then check the sites you are interested to see if they have launched virtual alternatives.
