American Public Health Association Internship 

Boston University Office of Pre-Professional Advising maintains a list of summer opportunities by state and local in Boston.

Center for Disease Control The CDC offers a variety of internships in the summer as well as during the year if you are looking at a gap year. See link for specific dates and duration of programs. Programs available for high school, college, graduate and medical school students. Some can be as short as 4 weeks or as long as 1 year. 

Clinical Trials.gov If you are looking for a specific clinical trial in a particular city (Ann Arbor, Los Angeles, Sydney) or on a particular topic (ALS, Asthma, Breast Cancer) you can use the search engine to find clinical trials. Then it is up to you to contact the researcher to see if they have any open summer research positions. This tool is helpful if you are interested in finding something very specific such as breast cancer research in Los Angeles.

Sponsored by the Department of Energy, DOE offers the Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships (SULI) for students interested in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers by providing research experiences at 17 Department of Energy (DOE) laboratories. Internships can be 10 week summer opportunities or a 16 week semester option.

The Institute for Broadening Participation presents the Pathwaystoscience.org website that maintains a GREAT searchable database of summer research opportunites for K-8, high school students, college students, graduate students, researchers. 

Johns Hopkins Pre-professional Advising Office maintains a great deal of resources and references for their students and many are available to you on their website. Skip down to the section labeled Additional Research Opportunities. Honestly the links go on and on so don't miss this great resource. 

Mass General Summer Research Trainee Program (SRTP) pairs accepted students with MGH faculty in Boston to undertake an original research project.

Meals on Wheels. Find your local chapter and volunteer. 

Maternal Child Health Careers/Research Initiatives for Student Enhancement - Undergraduate Program (MCHC/RISE-UP) in cooperation with the CDC offers 3+ summer programs. This summer program focuses on public health and on elimination of health disparities and promotion of health equity. Students select one of the three partner institutions: Kennedy Krieger Institute/Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD, University of South Dakota/Sanford School of Medicine Center for Disabilities in Sioux Falls, SD or University of California in Davis, CA. $3500 stipend awarded to all students. Deadline: January 31, 2022. 

National Alliance on Mental Illness. Become a HelpLine volunteer

National Association for Advisors of the Health Professions: NAAHP has an updated list for summer opportunities for pre-health students both Clinical and Research opportunities.

National Institutes of Health offers Clinical Summer Internships (8wks) for undergraduates. The application opens mid-November and closes on March 1st. Conduct research through the Training Programs in Biomedical Sciences (summer or year).  The NIH also offers a high school internship in biomedical research.

National Science Foundation funds a large number of research opportunities for undergraduate students through its REU Sites program. Click on the Search REU Site link and you will receive very specific contact information and a short note on their study. Click link to the left Student- Search for REU site.

Operation Smile Helping people internationally born with cleft lip, cleft palate or other facial deformities. 

Planned Parenthood offers a searchable database by state of available positions and a form for volunteers to complete.

Princeton's Health Professions office has a long list of summer clinical opportunities including many international locations. Princeton also has a great page containing.

Reach Out and Read Program. Helps to bring the love of reading into pediatrician's office.

Rochester Institute of Technology compiled this comprehensive list of paid summer opportunities, co-op/Internships and Summer Research Opportunities in Biomedical Research and for Premed Students. This site is really worth a look. It's completely up to date and the list is HUGE. Bookmark this page for future reference. Great job Rochester!

Summer Enrichment and Pipeline Programs, AAMC Comprehensive list coordinated by the AAMC, unfortunately many links are out of date. Use the names and google the program directly.

Summer Health Professions Education Program According to SHPEP,  they offer a "free summer enrichment program focused on improving access to information and resources for college students interested in the health professions. SHPEP’s goal is to strengthen the academic proficiency and career development of students underrepresented in the health professions and prepare them for a successful application and matriculation to health professions schools. These students include, but are not limited to, individuals who identify as African American/Black, American Indian and Alaska Native and Hispanic/Latino, and who are from communities of socioeconomic and educational disadvantage. SHPEP, formerly known as the Summer Medical and Dental Education Program (SMDEP), expanded in 2016 to include a broader array of health professions."  This is a very competitive but amazing program. There are 13 sites including but not limited to Columbia, Howard, LSU, Rutgers, Univ. of Alabama, Univ., of Florida,  Univ. of Washington and more. The application normally opens December 1 and closes on February 1.

Swarthmore College has a great list of summer opportunities both domestic and abroad.

Volunteer with the Trevor Project and help LGBTQ individuals through phone/text counseling support

Weill Cornell Medicine sponsors the Travelers Summer Research Fellowship Program, a summer research program for underrepresented applicants to medical school who are interested in working in underserved communities. Deadline: February 1, 2022.

HIGH SCHOOL

Many volunteer, internship and research programs are available to high school as well as college students so please review the complete volunteer lists on the Newport site and find the opportunities listed for high school students. Participation in these programs are by no means mandatory for getting into college but can be beneficial if you are trying to explore the field of medicine or interested in the BA/MD programs. UC Irvine HEALTH & SCIENCE ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS high school and middle school students. 

Boston Leadership Institute offers STEM programs for teens in topics such as medicine, math, coding, psychology and engineering to name just a few. For example, they have a one week surgery program that offers a hands on lab to help students learn about anatomy and physiology and try out their dissection skills. All programs are offered in the Boston area at local university campuses.
